Cyborg in Theatre

Cyborg in Theatre

The latest edition of My EDGE Mag out this morning is on the theme of gifts and creativity, to coincide with the Manifest Creative Arts Festival at Avondale College. I produced the above illustration, ‘Cyborg in Theatre’ for the bible-study page in ink and gouache on watercolour paper. Many thanks to Jessica Symes for asking me to produce artwork for the magazine!

lighting referencecyborg conceptsAfter an initial round of concepts of various mecha being studied or operated on, we settled on the idea of a cyborg human. The cyborg lies prone atop a backlit operating table, so as a point of reference for lighting I photographed a small mecha action figure atop my light box. I especially like how in the photograph the light from the box’s internal fluorescent tubing creates a radial gradation from bright to tinted light around the edges.
